While the method described below will continue to function, you are encouraged to move your shared contacts into SharePoint to benefit from versioning of contact data and enhanced remote access.
It is possible to create a list of contacts in Outlook and then share this around the office - this is useful if you have a list of suppliers for example and want to ensure everyone in your team is always working from the most up-to-date version of this list. However, when sending the sharing invitation you may receive an error that reads "Folder sharing is not available with the following entries because of permission settings on your network". There are no settings in place on our corporate network that would prevent this feature from working, contrary to the error message text.
This is a bug in Outlook, and it happens when you type the email addresses for the people you want to share with straight into the To... field, and allow Outlook to auto-complete the entries. Clicking the To... button and picking the recipients from the Global Address List will allow you to send the sharing invitation without issue.
